It takes account of the National Standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants and Teaching Assistants and is firmly grounded in classroom practice, whilst also exploring the wealth of educational research that is now available.

• Setting high expectations and managing behaviour: supporting you to develop an appreciation of why pupils sometimes behave inappropriately and how to manage this through a consistent approach
• Understanding the key factors that affect pupils’ learning: understanding what learning is, how we learn, why we often don’t learn and practical ways to ensure we have impact in the classroom
• Knowing how to support learners with SEND to access the curriculum: understanding inclusion and how to adapt provision to suit different needs
• Developing the skills of planning carefully-structured activities that motivate learners and advance their learning; exploring desirable difficulty, ensuring work is pitched at the right level and all pupils can access challenge
• Increasing knowledge and understanding of how to provide focused feedback and assess understanding; the importance of formative assessment and its critical role in identifying what to teach next
• Directing the work of additional adults; getting the best out of support staff so that they impact on pupils’ learning
