This Second Year Teacher Programme is designed for teachers who finished their NQT year in Summer 2021 and are known as the ‘the pre-September 2021 cohort’.

This programme is an excellent opportunity for anyone in their second year of teaching, and especially for those who have already worked with us during their NQT year.

It gives individuals the opportunity to develop their teaching expertise further. It also gives schools the opportunity to take advantage of the ‘one-off payment to further support the development of this cohort’ which is being offered by the DfE. More information can be found online.

Delegates may attend some or all of the six sessions during the academic year.
Session One - Behaviour Management (links to TS 1 and 7)
Session Two - Pedagogy (links to TS 2, 4 and 5)
Session Three - Curriculum (links to TS 3)
Session Four - Assessment (links to TS 6)
Session Five - Professional Behaviours (links to TS 8)
Session Six - Planning for my career ahead

This half-day session will:

  • show the value of keeping a reflective log/journal as a practitioner and how this can support inquiry and research;
  • identify the importance of developing the skills and habits of reflective practice, as tools for building professional skills and deepening understanding;
  • support self-review against Teachers’ standards to identify elements of practice which have the greatest impact on pupils’ learning;
  • provide an overview of diverse forms of educational provision, identifying that each has its own unique ‘culture’;
  • prompt thinking about their long-term career and what they want to build experience in (age-range, attainment levels, types of learning need, subjects, working with support staff, therapists and parents and carers, in different communities);
  • support teachers to reflect on their own current contextual understanding (their specific knowledge of their current school/provision, including their understanding of pupils’ need and the school’s culture), sharing this within this session to demonstrate the diversity of experience.
Please note: Teachers in their 3rd and 4th year of teaching may also find these sessions useful and are welcome to attend.
