Fluency is an essential dimension of what it is to be a reader. In this course we look at practical ways to teach fluency by acknowledging that it is a combination of automatic decoding and prosody. From this standpoint, we can view fluency as a bridge between decoding and comprehension. The course is inspired by the work of Tim Raskinski (The Megabook of Fluency) as well as the presenter (Rachel Clarke’s) work on Assessing Fluency in Reading published by Collins.
Course objectives:
• Define what is meant by reading fluency
• Understand how reading fluency is a key aspect of reading comprehension
• Explore techniques to teach reading fluency
